This portrait is of a friend of mine, Nicola, and the aim was for it to be as informal and relaxed as possible. We went through the usual routine of trying various poses and numerous outfits, but most seemed too traditional or too stiff to adequately express her youthful personality and outlook on life. An artist herself, who loves modern art and minimalism, this pose and setting, with its clear, simple shapes, informal attire, unusual viewpoint, and element of playfulness, seemed to strike the right balance. The painting ( measuring 90x90 cm) was done in oils on fine linen canvas, and was completed in 5 sittings.
